tiny houses in the house

Our “house” is filled with talented shopgirls!  One of our own, Mary O’Meara creates beautiful ceramic houses by knitting or braiding a yarn swatch and then pressing it into the clay to reproduce it.  The patterned pieces are then cut out of the clay to be assembled, glazed and fired.  These one-of-a-kind, handmade houses are wonderful gift idea!

Introducing… J.M. Plumridge

The day is finally here! Our very own Jen has launched her own line of project bags and notions pouches, exclusively here at nina.

Jen’s focus is on environmentally conscious design, using ethically sourced and recycled materials to create bags that are both cute and functional.

Her bucket bag is sturdy canvas with a fabric or leather strap. Each bag is very roomy and has interior pockets for notions.

The pouches, available in leather or cork, are perfect for carrying small notions with you! Pick one up for yourself or surprise someone with a J.M. Plumridge original!

new owner, new season, new yarns & more!

Hi everyone!  It’s Hilary here, the new owner, finally checking in!  I really can’t thank everyone enough for their continued support as Nina and I have gone through this process together.   Since I’ve taken over, the other employees and I have been having a great time in the shop seeing many of you, and we’ve been quite busy preparing for the fall/winter season.

For those of you who don’t know, we have open knitting and crocheting on Saturdays and Sundays from 3 – 5 pm.  We have a lovely group of stitchers pretty much every weekend!  We’ve also added Thursday Night Stitch Nights for those who can’t make it on weekends.  Please join us on Thursdays from 7 – 9 pm as we knit, crochet, and enjoy yummy bites from Chef on the Roof.  We also have chosen to support a different charity each month, with a suggested $5 donation.  For the month of October, the group has decided to donate to United for Puerto Rico.  As you can see here, it’s a fun bunch!

We’ve also been stocking so much new stuff, a combination of consistent favorites as well as lots of new yarns!  Here’s a peek at a few of them…

Our new oh-so-soft and luxurious Cardiff Cashmere Classic.

Twisted Owl 2-Ply Sock, fun colors and speckles!

Two yarns from Mrs. Moon, Swaddle, a super soft baby yarn…

and Plump, a lovely new addition to our super bulky collection.

Some 21-Color Mitt and Ski Trio Hat kits from Blue Sky Fibers.

The luxurious and limited-edition American Scenic, also from Blue Sky Fibers.

These are some of our new favorites, but we have even more in the shop and more arriving every week.  Come on in to see us and don’t miss out during this exciting season!

august recap

It’s been an eventful month!

August started with the Annual Chicago Yarn Crawl, a week long event that encouraged crafters to visit all 21 participating yarn shops in the Chicagoland area.

It was busy – our best Crawl ever!

We had many new customers in the shop during the Yarn Crawl, and our featured project was well received. Do you know about it?  It’s called Big Bad Blend, uses 4 colors of Big Bad Wool Weepaca, and is a simple scarf with a tassel flair.  So many people purchased the yarn to make this pretty scarf.

We created a Big Bad KAL so we could all knit it together – every Saturday from 3-5pm. It’s never too late to join, whether you’re just about to cast on or are ready to finish.

We introduced a couple of other projects during the Yarn Crawl too –  Big Bad Marl and the Crescent Pom Shawl.

Both are made from the super soft Big Bad Wool Weepaca.

We drew a winner for our Yarn Crawl Prize… Congrats to Jennifer!

For our Special Event during the Yarn Crawl, we hosted Margaret from Heidi & Lana.

She offered her lovely project kits and sweet stitch markers during a Wine & Cheese Party.

People had fun trying on her designs during the evening, especially Passage,  Discovery, and Reflection.

The shop occasionally hosts special events, book signings, trunk shows, and sales. Private events can also be arranged at the shop by request.

Perhaps you'd like to have a birthday party centered around a knitting lesson. Or a baby shower during which everyone learns to knit a square for a baby blanket. Or a corporate networking event that features knitting instruction. Or a book club that encourages participants to knit while discussing the book. Nina: a well-knit shop is available for these and other special events.
